Fallout Shelter: Understanding Mr. Handy’s Role and Evaluating His Worth (2024)

The Fallout franchise has come a long way since its first installment in 1997 – it became one of the best action role-playing gaming franchises of all time. It brought us great installments like Fallout 2, Fallout 3, and Fallout: New Vegas. However, more game studios started developing their games for other platforms, including mobile phones. Mobile gaming became “huge” recently, and Bethesda decided to develop a Fallout game for phones – Fallout Shelter. The player creates their own Vault and becomes an overseer of its inhabitants, and one of them could be a quite well-known character in the Fallout franchise – the robot named Mr. Handy. This article will discuss what Mr. Handy does in Fallout Shelter and whether you should buy him.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Mr. Handy is essentially a more useful Dweller in Fallout Shelter. The player can place it on one floor of their Vault to collect the resources stationed there while simultaneously protecting the Vault from Raiders and other enemies.

All in all, Fallout Shelter enjoyed great success and spread to other continents like Europe and Asia. Essentially, Fallout Shelter is a simulation game in which a player creates special communities for his people. Specifically, in Fallout lingo, the player builds a Vault-Tec Corporation vault and acts as an overseer. The player needs to take care of the existential needs of their Vault inhabitants, like food, power, water, and dwellers.

Dwellers are inhabitants of overseers Vault and are a valuable resource. Specifically, a player can send dwellers outside the Vault to scavenge goods all over the Wasteland. Moreover, dwellers are responsible for the three most important survival aspects of living in the Vault, and players, as overseers, need to do anything they can to make themselves happy.

To make the dwellers happy, one needs to meet their basic needs, like assigning them jobs that fit their highest SPECIAL stat. Of course, food, water, and comfort are other important factors for your dwellers to be happy. If you fail, your other dwellers will suffer, leading to your Vault shutting down.

We established that dwellers need to be happy for your Vault to run properly, so what is Mr. Handy, and how is it different than “ordinary” dwellers?

What is Mr. Handy in Fallout Shelter?

Dwellers can come to the Vault or be descendants of inhabitants of the Vault. Of course, the latter option is better since you will get a dweller with high SPECIAL stats. However, one legendary dweller can be acquired in the game – good old Mr. Handy. Veteran fans of the Fallout franchise will tell you they are really familiar with this robot because it appeared in every single Fallout game.

Mister Handy has quite the lore behind it – it is a multipurpose robot developed by General Atomics International before the Great War. The robot was really popular with government agencies, private companies, and more, and they were used as maintenance robots – usually as bodyguards.

Mister Handy has a similar use in the Fallout Shelter, and it is the overseer Vault assistant that helps collect resources or defend the Vault from radioactive rats, ghouls, or Raiders. Mr. Handy is fully operatable by the overseer and can be sent to Wasteland to collect bottle caps, and it cannot be destroyed while away. In the Vault, during the attack, Mr. Handy can be destroyed.

We can already see that Mr. Handy is useful for any Vault, but should you spend your money and buy Mr. Handy in Fallout Shelter? Let’s find out!

Should you buy Mr. Handy in Fallout Shelter (& how)

There are two ways of acquiring Mr. Handy in Fallout Shelter – opening lunchboxes and buying the character in the in-game Store. The first option is much harder since Mr. Handy is a Legendary character in the Fallout Shelter, and it’s quite rare. To get it, one needs to complete the objectives that award you with Lunchboxes, an in-game loot where you can get common or rare items.

Should you try to acquire Mr. Handy? Hundred percent. Mister Handy does what ordinary dwellers do but more efficiently. It does chores and completes objectives in your Vault while also protecting your inhabitants. Enemies can damage the robot, and when it’s destroyed, it explodes. However, Mr. Handy has the option “human” dwellers don’t have – the revival or, simply, repair option. The repairs cost 2000 bottle caps; if you can afford it, Mr. Handy is an amazing asset to any Vault.

Grinding in games can be exhausting, and Fallout Shelter is no different. However, the more Lunchboxes you get, the more loot you can collect and get the valuable Mr. Handy character. However, getting a proper Lunchbox is hard to do, especially if other objectives are getting in the way of your progress (usually the ones that don’t have Lunchboxes as awards.) All in all, getting Mr. Handy via loot/awards is really hard, but we cannot exclude that possibility.

When buying Mr. Handy in the in-game Store, you can acquire it for $0.99 and place it on one of the floors of your Vault to do chores.

In the end, Mr. Handy can be really valuable, and his ability to collect resources and protect the inhabitants of the Vault while having the ability to be repaired is great for your Vault in the long run. Mister Handy is worth acquiring.
