One of the earlier definitions of cross-cultural management focuses on its behavioral aspects and underlines an importance of interaction of people from different cultures. “Cross-cultural management is the study of the behavior of people in organizations located in cultures and nations around the world” [Adler 1983, p. 226]. This definition is based on the description of organizational behavior within countries and cultures on one hand and of organizational behavior across countries and cultures on another. Cross-cultural Interaction Between Tourists and Tourist-guides

Mediators are important part of tourism to interplay facilitator role between hosts and guests. Between two different cultures, the mediators guide the interaction processes, behaviors and travelling. A poor guide can ruin an entire holiday experience through insensitivity, communication problems, or an authoritarian style projected at the wrong time. Some works point out that a good guide, working in the correct context, provides a relatively safe and secure milieu for the tourist to collect those authentic experiences which fulfill the individual's motivation for travelling. Culture shock is precipitated by the anxiety that results from losing all one's familiar sign and symbols of social intercourse. It is not only the tourists who experience culture shock at the behaviour and beliefs of the natives, but also natives who experience culture shock at the unusual habits of tourists. This paper examines the cross-cultural interactions between tourists and tourist guides. There is found various difficulties faced by tourists as well as tourist guides. Habits are also important part of cultural behaviour. The role and activities of tourist guides as mediator and facilitator are considered crucial elements of tourism sector. Thus, this paper intends to explore the experiences and difficulties faced by tourist guides; and cross-cultural communication process. Role of Language to Make or Break a Tourist Experience in a Cross Culture

This paper presents a review of the literature relevant to the topic of intercultural communication in the hospitality industry. English has become the accepted “lingua franca” of international business, and this is referred to by others as the “built-in bias” of the English language (Munshie and McKie, 2001). The hospitality industry is a prime example of this, and it has become accepted practice for customer-facing hotel staff to be able to speak English to come extent, regardless of the country in which the hotel is located. It is much less likely for an English receptionist to speak Spanish, for example. One expert has pointed out that frequently non-verbal communication can be misinterpreted. For example, normally a handshake is brief but in Spain it may be prolonged for several seconds. This does not show deep personal warmth as it might somewhere else. This paper considers the concepts of culture, tourism and communication issues and their mutual relationships. Tourism is centered on the fundamental principles of exchange between peoples and is both an expression and experience of culture. Cultural tourism is far more than production and consumption of 'high' art and heritage. It reaches into some deep conceptual territories relating to how we construct and understand ourselves, the world and the multilayered relationships between them. To define cultural tourism first of all we have to determine the meaning of the term culture. In this paper we do not intend to provide a starting point since we feel that the determination of the context provides us the basics for the researches on cultural tourism. Cultural tourism can be characterized both from the perspective of supply and demand and also from the point of view of theoretical and practical approach. Cultural tourism is connected with the intercultural communication. The culture influences the norms and patterns of behavior of different societies, including the role and significance of culture in the process of creating communication styles. Intercultural communication in the context of cultural tourism is considered as a specific interaction between 'us' and 'them', friend and foe, in which cultural exchange takes place. The paper aims-to reveal how cultural tourism serves as a tool for better cross-cultural understanding;-how the cross-cultural misunderstandings can be corrected or rectified using cultural tourism as a mechanism.

Cultural sensitivity: an antecedent of the image gap of tourist destinations

Purpose This paper aims to analyse the influence of the cultural sensitivity of tourists on the change in image that occurs for tourist destinations prior to and after a visit; understanding cultural sensitivity as the recognition of and respect for different beliefs, values and customs. Design/methodology/approach A structural equations model is carried out with a representative sample of 411 tourists from Tenerife (Canary Islands). Findings Cultural sensitivity directly and positively influences the gap in the global image of the destination, so greater cultural sensitivity improves the post-visit image compared to the pre-visit image at a global level. Likewise, there are significant differences in cultural sensitivity according to the sociodemographic characteristics of tourists.
