Aside from obvious ones like Super Smash Bros, there's been a ton of new crossovers that have come out or are coming out. Some I can name off the top of my head are:

  • Project X Zone (Namco Bandai/Capcom/Sega RPG)
  • J Stars Victory VS (Shonen Jump Fighting Game)
  • Namco High (Namco Bandai/Homestuck Dating Sim)
  • Sonic Lost World (Nights Into Dreams and Yoshis Island DLC stages)
  • Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed (Simon from Yogscast and Ryo from Shenmue for DLC)
  • Space Galaga (Space Dandy/Galaga Shooter)
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris (Puyo Puyo/Tetris)

And a few others I can't remember. Anyone wondering why so many crossover video games?

They also have from a few last year Pokemon Conquest (Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition).

They also have announced Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem and Hyrule Warriors. The last one might not be a crossover we don't know but it looks to be Zelda with the gameplay of Tecmo-Koei's Warriors series.

Because most of the publishers have become old and successful enough to rely on their legacy as a gimmick.

And it's not that new a concept either: Ehrgeiz and DreamMix TV World Fighters go back to 1998 and 2003 respectively. Soulcalibur II invited 3 console-exclusive guest fighters as far back as 2002. The King of Fighters goes all the way back to 1994. Besides Smash and Capcom Vs Whatever, I'm probably missing a few.

Yes they've always existed, especially when one is looking at Japanese games (which nearly all of those are), where crossovers occur more often. Many developers/designers/writers like to pay homages/respect to anything that influenced their current works or their hobbies and I think in Japan, it's a lot easier for them to come together to pull that out. It usually helps grant exposure of the new and old to a wide variety of audiences as well.

The gaming universe is collapsing, causing them to all merge within each other. Sooner or later all video games will start sharing universes permanently.

Well I know these crossovers have always existed, but it seems they've been coming hardcore this year. Usually only one or two crossovers happen a year, but this is quite the handful!

you sound as if more crossovers are a bad thing

Not crossovers so much as I have noticed the number of games bending over backwards to have internal crossovers that really should not be possible.

Pokemon Black 2 & White 2 with their world tournament where no one from the old games has aged a day, all the more annoying because Game Freak specifically said no old characters like Oak would be appearing that generation.

Fire Emblem Awakening, which saw fit to include something from every previous Fire Emblem game, time and distance be damned.

Sonic generations is pretty self explanatory but it still must be noted Super Mario Galaxy used the 3D-2D dynamic already without the crossover gimmick added in.

Thing is, I am not just noticing it in video games. The Digimon Xros Wars manga comic just acted as if everything had happened in the same world forever, in complete defiance of all prior continuity.

Those aren't really crossovers so much as they are call backs and mythology gags.

Maybe not but is still a trend I have been noticing since 2010 or so. A real headache was Street Fighter IV, which despite being a prequel to Street Fighter III saw fit to include half of three's roster with no explanation whatsoever. No retcons, expansion pack pasts or anything.

Admittedly, the new tended to be SNK ripoffs (C-Viper) or rehashes of older Street Fighters (Able) so seeing Capcom break its own plot for the sake of cheap fan service did not leave the nasty taste in my mouth that kind of thing usually does. Similarly, the Hyrule Historia's (sloppy) attempt to convince us all these games that clearly do not fit in a workable timeline actually do was not so annoying simply because Nintendo had been making (sloppy)attempts to convince us since 2001.

You know what, they may not be crossovers in the strictest sense but the content thrown together is so displaced they might as well be.

Oh, yeah, apparently there's going to be a Dynasty Warriors crossover with Legend Of Zelda, to be called Hyrule Musou.

And Koei Tecmo apparently wants to do a crossover, too.

Actually, speaking of Musou games, we are getting a new Gundam Musou game, so...

Holy ravioli! There's a Tetris and Puyo Pop crossover game? I hope we Americans get to try that out. If I'm not mistaken, this Puyo Pop thing has been around for ages in Japan, but not so much in the USA. (Why's that?)

But maybe crossing over with something as big as Tetris might help bring this to the shores of America?

I do kinda think people have a bit of crossover fever nowadays, and I'm seeing it extend beyond video games. Avengers, anyone?

....Not that I mind, of course. I'm a massive crossover junkie, so I'm loving it.
